ITunes is distorted and slow?

Whenever I try to import a new CD onto my iTunes it takes a really long time and the songs often come out with a crackling sound over the top. This crackling sound then gets transferred to my iPod when I sync them. Any help please, this is a really annoying problem, because I can't get any new music on my iPod!! :( Thanks for youe help.
