How do you get mold off of your bathroom walls and keep it off?

I am wanting to repaint my bathroom but there is a bit of mold on the upper wall and ceiling. My boyfriend says that the drywall has to be replaced, which is pretty expensive because I don't know how to do it & neither does he. Is there anyway to keep mold off of drywall? Can I sand it off, or use a chemical?
