The Handmaid's Tale interesting question...? Islam?

In the novel The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood in chapter 28 she talks about "how everyone thought the government had been overthrown by islamic fanatics" which shocks me because this book was written in 1984-85....do i need to brush up on my history ? Does anybody know what was going on with islam during this time period?
