Genre issues in the world of music?

When I hear alternative, REM, The Offspring, and Smashing Pumpkins immediately come to mind. I don't think all elitists stick to alternative, but more indie. Some (I did NOT say all) indie fans are very elitist just because they love a genre most people "don't get"
