Why do so many think self-righteousness and hypocrisy are only religious characteristics?

More often than not, they are the only qualities characteristics we see from religion. Imperfection doesn't mean we don't take responsibility for our actions. So if I say or do something that is hypocritical or self-righteous, I turn it into something positive by admitting that I am wrong and making an renewed effort at overcoming the flaw.
